Goodness of God

Mikuláš Török, 7.10.2007

Ephesians 2:4-7 But God, being rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, 5 even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace have ye been saved), 6 and raised us up with him, and made us to sit with him in the heavenly [places], in Christ Jesus: 7 that in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

Genesis 1:1-10 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. ... 10 ... and God saw that it was good.

Psalm 54:6 I will give thanks unto thy name, O Lord, for it is good.

Psalm 143:10 Teach me to do thy will; For thou art my God: Thy Spirit is good; Lead me in the land of uprightness.

Psalm 119:39 Turn away my reproach whereof I am afraid; For thine ordinances are good.

Psalm 119:65-72 Thou hast dealt well with thy servant, O Lord, according unto thy word. ... 68 Thou art good, and doest good; Teach me thy statutes. ... 72 The law of thy mouth is better unto me Than thousands of gold and silver.

James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, neither shadow that is cast by turning.

Psalm 103:2 Bless Lord, O my soul, And forget not all his benefits.

Jeremiah 3:12 Go, and proclaim these words toward the north, and say, Return, thou backsliding Israel, saith Lord; I will not look in anger upon you; for I am merciful, saith Jehovah, I will not keep [anger] for ever.

Psalm 86:5 For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive, And abundant in loving kindness unto all them that call upon thee.

Psalm 34:16 The face of Lord is against them that do evil, To cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.

2 Timothy 3:1-7 But know this, that in the last days grievous times shall come. 2 For men shall be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, haughty, railers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 without natural affection, implacable, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, no lovers of good, 4 traitors, headstrong, puffed up, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God; 5 holding a form of godliness, but having denied the power therefore. From these also turn away. ... 7 ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

The really good and full life with God requires a strong internal assurance that God is good, that everything coming from God is good, as well as, that all the good on the Earth has come from no one else than Him.

It is not enough to take it only as a pure fact - it is necessary for a believer to be imbued by this fact, having the real internal revelation from the Holy Spirit, that God is always solely good. Also, the things that he has made are good, even though there were things that seem to be bad on the first sight in people's eyes (the flood, extermination of the Kanaan nations, etc.). A human, who is not internally assured about God's goodness, cannot really trust him and it is easy for him to fall into doubts, whether it is right to follow God implicitly.

Everything God has done for us comes from His love (Eph 2:4-8) as well as from his goodness.
God is good, God's Spirit is good (Psalm 143:10), God's creation (Gen 1:1-10) and his name are good as well (Psalm 54:6). Even God's ordinances and laws are good (Psalm 119:39). The psalmist says that they are better that "thousands of gold and silver" (Psalm 119:65-72). And it is not hard to find other examples. James declares that "good" is simply everything coming from God (James 1:17). It is really good to realize and internally accept how good God is. And it is very good to be grateful for that (Psalm 103:2).

Knowledge of God's goodness also leads to immediate repentance. A Christian, who has been assured about God's goodness to himself, does not delay repentance - he knows that God is so good that he forgives everybody, who truly turns himself away from the sin that he has done (Jeremiah 3:12). Thanks to this assurance, the man repents as soon as he realizes he has sinned.

God's kindness impacts all people, particularly those, who are calling upon him (Psalm 86:5).

Unfortunetelly, God's kindness is often in the church nowadays presented in a distorted way, not corresponding to the Scriptures. False interpretation, which says that God's kindness is so unlimited that God forgives all people without repentance, brings a lot of Christians into a life-threatening state of being stuck in a persuasion that their salvation cannot be jeopardized even by their sinful life. And sometimes even in a case that the sin is clearly defined in the Bible. In the reality, the salvation of these people is very seriously jeopardized and will be lost without repentance. For the Scriptures clearly state that the Lord treats those, who do evil, very uncompromisingly (Psalm 34:16)! The disregard for God's goodness in the last times in the church is mentioned in Paul's letter to Timothy (2Tim 3:2-17)

God's goodness is perfect. The internal assurance about it is one of the cornerstones of a good life with God. On the other side - the teachings about universal God's goodness with no conditions is fallacious and brings people to perdition.
