Everything good comes from above

Mikuláš Török, 2006-12-10

James 1:17 Every good endowment and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.

Ps 107:1-9 O give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures for ever! Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he has redeemed from trouble and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south. Some wandered in desert wastes, finding no way to a city to dwell in; hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them. Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress; he led them by a straight way, till they reached a city to dwell in. Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wonderful works to the sons of men! For he satisfies him who is thirsty, and the hungry he fills with good things.

Eze 18:20-32 The soul that sins shall die. The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son; the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself. "But if a wicked man turns away from all his sins which he has committed and keeps all my statutes and does what is lawful and right, he shall surely live; he shall not die. None of the transgressions which he has committed shall be remembered against him; for the righteousness which he has done he shall live. Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked, says the Lord GOD, and not rather that he should turn from his way and live? But when a righteous man turns away from his righteousness and commits iniquity and does the same abominable things that the wicked man does, shall he live? None of the righteous deeds which he has done shall be remembered; for the treachery of which he is guilty and the sin he has committed, he shall die. "Yet you say, 'The way of the Lord is not just.' Hear now, O house of Israel: Is my way not just? Is it not your ways that are not just? When a righteous man turns away from his righteousness and commits iniquity, he shall die for it; for the iniquity which he has committed he shall die. Again, when a wicked man turns away from the wickedness he has committed and does what is lawful and right, he shall save his life. Because he considered and turned away from all the transgressions which he had committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die. Yet the house of Israel says, 'The way of the Lord is not just.' O house of Israel, are my ways not just? Is it not your ways that are not just? "Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, says the Lord GOD. Repent and turn from all your transgressions, lest iniquity be your ruin. Cast away from you all the transgressions which you have committed against me, and get yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! Why will you die, O house of Israel? For I have no pleasure in the death of any one, says the Lord GOD; so turn, and live."
God is good all the time, His goodness is unchanging and steady – a part of His nature. He can’t be other than good (James 1:17, Ps 107:1-9) and also anything from Him is good and every good comes from Him, above all His Spirit and His Word. (And so every God’s commandment or requirement is good too.)

Christians are well acquainted to that. However, they sometimes experience, or see around them circumstances which they don’t understand or think of them as too difficult. Then the faith of some may be weakened or shaken and they start doubt God’s goodness. They even can blame God of evil intentions.

God’s goodness is not an emotion. It operates in the lives of people who call unto God and expect their help from Him. (Ps 107:1-9) Therefore let us rely on God’s goodness, expect it, be grateful and praise the Lord for it. (Ps 107:1) God’s goodness is so great that even the one who has sinned and turned away from God, but then repented, can trust in His grace and forgiveness (if the repentance is sincere), as God is pleased by doing only good towards a man. (Even though He makes clear the consequences of life in sin) (Eze 18:20-32).
